  • Slack's free plan only shows your last 90 days of messages.
  • Data older than one year is deleted.

The What

Slack's free plan only lets you see messages and files from the last 90 days. Anything in your workspace older than a year is deleted.

The Why

If your team relies on old chats or files, anything past a year is gone for good. Paying for Slack brings back older history, but only for data that hasn't been deleted yet.

  • Slack only bills you for people who actually use it.
  • You get credit back when someone goes inactive.

The What

On Slack's paid plans, you pay only for active members, and Slack spots inactive ones on its own. If someone you paid for stops using Slack, you get credit back, prorated, for the time they didn't use.

The Why

If your team has people who left or rarely log in, you aren't stuck paying full price for their seats. This only applies to plans bought a certain way, so how you pay matters.

  • Slack lets you add free guests to one channel.
  • Each paid member unlocks up to 5 guests.

The What

Paid Slack plans let you add a contractor, intern or client to a single channel as a Single-Channel Guest, with no seat fee. Each paid active member lets you add up to 5.

The Why

If you work with outside people, you can bring them into a channel without paying for another seat. There is a limit tied to how many paid members you have.
