  • YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music with no ads.
  • You can download songs and play them in the background.

The What

YouTube Premium comes with the YouTube Music app. You can listen without ads, save music to play offline and keep it playing while you use other apps.

The Why

If you pay for YouTube Premium and also pay for another music app, you may be paying twice. It only works where the YouTube Music app is offered.

  • Google may use your Gmail, Photos and Drive to tailor its services.
  • This only happens if you turn it on.

The What

Google services like Search and Gemini Apps can now use your Photos, Gmail and Drive data to tailor what you see, if you allow it. Ads may also be based on activity across Google services.

The Why

What's in your email, files and photos could shape search results and suggestions once these options are on. It stays off only while you leave it off, and the setting sits in your Google account.

  • Your YouTube contract is now with Google LLC, a US company.
  • The minimum age drops from 16 to 13.

The What

The company behind YouTube is now Google LLC instead of Google Ireland Limited. The promise of notice before changes that hurt you no longer says it comes by email or that you can end the deal.

The Why

You still get notice before a change that hurts you, though it may say less than before. If you upload videos, YouTube also gets wider rights to use them, including for promotion.

  • Google also collects data that is not tied to your account.
  • This includes when you are signed out.

The What

Google's privacy policy now says it gathers and uses data that isn't linked to your Google Account, like info tied to your browser, app or device. The European rights section was removed from this version.

The Why

Watching YouTube while signed out can still feed what Google learns about your device. If you are in the EU or UK, your rights are now harder to find in this document.

  • Kids must now be 16 to use YouTube alone.
  • Younger kids need a parent to turn it on.

The What

Kids now have to be 16, up from 13, to use YouTube without a parent. Anyone under 18 now needs a parent's or guardian's permission, and younger kids can use it if a parent turns it on.

The Why

If a teen at home aged 13 to 15 uses YouTube alone, that may now need a parent's setup. How each account in your family is managed can affect your Premium plan.

  • Google now names who is responsible for your data in Europe.
  • Some privacy settings got new names and may have moved.

The What

Google's privacy policy adds a section on rights for people under EU or UK data law. It names Google Ireland Limited as responsible for using your info to train Google's AI in the EEA and Switzerland.

The Why

If you live in Europe, this explains who handles your data and how to ask to see or remove it. Settings you chose before may now be under new names.

  • YouTube may keep copies of videos you delete.
  • YouTube says it keeps those copies out of view.

The What

YouTube can now keep copies of removed or deleted videos on its servers, but not show or share them. Your contract also moves to Google LLC in the US.

The Why

Deleting a video may not fully remove it from YouTube's systems. If you upload videos, you are also giving YouTube broader rights to use them and promote them, and there is a way to save your own copy first.

  • Google now covers photos, sound and video you share.
  • Some settings got new names.

The What

The policy now covers media you upload or take with your camera or mic, like images, files, sound and video. It also splits your activity into two history settings.

The Why

More of what you send to Google may be saved to your account and used to shape results and ads. Which of it is saved depends on settings you can check.

  • Google's ad tools may link what you do across sites and apps.
  • Incognito mode won't block it.

The What

Google's privacy policy now says its ad and analytics services may connect what you do on different sites and apps. Wording that a site owner may choose to turn this on was removed.

The Why

What you browse on other sites may be tied together more widely than the old wording suggested. Private browsing won't stop it, and your Web & App Activity setting is where some of this is controlled.

  • YouTube removed its one-year limit on legal claims.
  • You can still appeal a suspension.

The What

YouTube can now take down content it reasonably thinks breaks the rules, in line with the law. It can suspend accounts when it believes there is risk, and the one-year deadline to bring a legal claim is gone.

The Why

Without the one-year limit, there is no longer a tight deadline for disputes with YouTube. If your account is ever suspended, there is an appeal form, and timing matters.

  • You now have one year to bring a legal claim against YouTube.
  • After that, the claim is barred for good.

The What

Under the new terms, a legal claim about the service has to be brought within a year of when it starts. YouTube can also remove content at its own discretion.

The Why

If you have a problem with YouTube, your window to act may be shorter than local law would give you. Keeping receipts, screenshots and support emails helps you track when it started.

  • YouTube can keep using your videos after you delete them.
  • The terms don't say for how long.

The What

Before, your license to YouTube ended when you removed content. Now it lasts for a commercially reasonable time after deletion, and YouTube may hold on to server copies.

The Why

Once you take down a video, YouTube and other people may still hold some rights to it. No time limit is set, so how long that lasts is unclear.

  • Google renamed Location History to Timeline.
  • Your home and work addresses can still be used for ads.

The What

The privacy policy renames Location History to Timeline. It drops the words more useful from how saved home and work places feed ads, and adds a line on measuring ad campaigns.

The Why

If you saved a home or work address with Google, it may still shape the ads you see. The setting you knew as Location History has a new name, so it may be in a new place.
